For those who are trying to keep or lose their weight, the holidays can be a tricky time with the delicious Thanksgiving celebrations. If you’re watching what you eat, balancing what you eat and enjoying yourself can be a challenging task. Here are a few tips on how to stay on track but not having to completely abstain from the things you love.
1. Don’t skip any meals beforehand
Some people skip earlier meals to ‘save up’ for the Thanksgiving feast-this may backfire. Your blood sugar would be low and you’d become ravenously hungry, making it hard not to overeat. Instead, start with a light breakfast and lunch like a green smoothie or a salad so you aren’t completely starving by the time it’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Set aside time to be active during the day. Even just a walk or some yoga can go a long way. This will also help de-stress since the holidays can be a hectic time of the year.
3. Make a balanced plate
Be conscious about what you put on your plate and include as many vegetables as you can. Registered Nutritionist Kristen Carli states “At least half of your plate should contain vegetables.” The other two quarters should be lean protein and a carbohydrate.
4. Plan your indulgences and consciously decide what to skip
Instead of completely cutting off indulgences, choose them strategically. Decide which dishes are “worth it” such as your favorite pumpkin pie, as the ones that are not. This way, you can enjoy yourself with the favorite foods that really matter.

Some people feel guilt or shame after indulging, but try avoid feeling like this so you can get back to your usual regime. One day or a few days of overindulgences won’t stop your progress, instead, try and stay positive.
